I think it's the waiter's face combined with the abstrusely-crap-writing/multivalence of the text. All of the scenarios that they conjure for me are unutterably sad.
This one isn't as bad as another one with two women and a man that said, IIRC, "He only looks at her. He only talks to her." I'M TRYING TO EAT A TURKEY, BACON, AND GUACAMOLE WITH MY GRANDPA, QUIZNO'S. Sheesh!
